November 17, 2013 Sermon Recap: Names of God Series "Jehovah Rophe"

1. Jehovah Rophe: “The LORD who Heals”

  • Pronounced: juh-HO-vah RAH-fah

Rophe”:  To restore, to heal, to cure, to make whole

  • Occurs 67 times in OT
  • A physician not only in the physical sense but also in the moral and spiritual sense

First and only use of Jehovah Rophe: (Ex. 15:22-26)

  • Israel joyful on crossing Red Sea and triumphant over Pharaoh’s army
  • After 3 days in wilderness – people were hot and thirsty
  • Came to undrinkable waters of Marah (“bitter”)
  • People were complaining, angry and bitter
  • God directed Moses to throw wood from a specific tree into the pool and turn the water from bitter to sweet

Q) What area would you like God to turn from Bitter to Sweet?

____ Physical, ____ Spiritual, ____ Emotional, ____ Relational

God tested His people: If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD who healsyou.” (Ex. 15:26)

OT reveals God’s anxious desire and purpose to heal the hurt of His people, and the wounds and sorrows of all mankind.

                               (Ex. 3:7-8a; Ps. 147:3; 2 Pet. 3:9)

  • He must deal with the underlying cause – sin
  • Christ came to call sinners to repentance (Lk. 5:31-32)
  • The LORD is close to the broken hearted  (Ps. 34:18)

2. There are different types of Healing:

  • Physical, Spiritual, Emotional, Relational
  • Gifts of healing by the Holy Spirit          (1 Cor. 12:9)

Pastor’s self-realization:  After years of listening to people, coaching them in wise, biblical counsel and applying specific communication skills, I believe that Dawn and I have the gift of healing others – “emotionally”.

When I kept silent about my sin:                       (Ps 32:3-4)

  • My bones ached & I groaned all day long
  • God’s hand was heavy upon me constantly
  • My strength was sapped

Then I confessed & You forgave the guilt of my sin.  (Ps 32:5)

3. Jehovah who heals in the OT is Jesus who heals in the NT

John the Baptist’s disciples identified Jesus as the Messiah.

They asked Jesus, “Are You the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”          (Luke 7:18-20)

Jesus replied to John the Baptist’s disciples, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and Good News is preached to the poor.”    (Luke 7:21-22)

However, physical healing was only incidental to His objective

  • Healing was not His primary mission; but it proved His authority and relationship with God   (Luke 5:17-26)

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed.”         (1 Peter 2:24)

  • The healing here is from sin - not physical healing

Application: How can Jesus start healing you today?

____ Physical, ____ Spiritual, ____ Emotional, ____ Relational

Q) How can you bring healing to others? Who? ____________
