Sunday, December 22nd, 2013: Names of God "Immanuel"

Emmanuel which means “God with us.”

God with us. The baby, in Matthew, the angel of the Lord said was to be named Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. The one that was foretold in Isaiah 7:14.14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[a] a sign: The virgin[b] will conceive and give birth to a son, and[c] will call him Immanuel.[

How does her elderly cousin react? Luke 1:42-45 What was this promise that God made to this young girl? Luke 1:26-38 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

Because of our desires, we lost that original fellowship with God—His Holiness could not tolerate our sin. Yet His love put into motion His plan to redeem us from ourselves and our mistaken desires.

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph (in the workplace), Moses, (in the midst of conflict) Joshua (leading a new nation), Solomon (wisdom in leading a nation),David (through trials and through sin).

God had promised a future King, a Messiah would come through the line of David, and He delivered on that promise. He reinforced that promise through Isaiah 53 foretelling of the birth of Jesus in Isaiah 9:6-7 6 For to us a child is born,     to us a son is given,     and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called     Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. How many of you know that you have God with you? Have you ever thought of what your life would be without God? So then, who is this Jesus, this Emmanuel? He is                                                            WonderfulCounselor                         Mighty God                         Everlasting Father                         Prince of Peace He is God with Us—the Great I AM!

He is the light in the darkness, a message of hope in times of despair, a cup of water to the thirsty, and he is justice and mercy. He is God with us.

All of that wrapped up in a tiny baby that would enter the world mostly unnoticed by men.

And that 14 year old that carried Him faithfully raised Him and loved Him as a child and as a man. Did she know that God was with her?
