Believing is Seeing

How do we measure if something is true?  We usually use the “Scientific Method”, where the data must be:

• Observable
• Measurable
• Repeatable

Then, we commonly say “seeing is believing”.  We trust our senses as our absolute authority.But, to prove the existence of people, you can use a different means called the “Historical Method”.

With this method, the issues are:

• Eyewitness reports
• Reliable witnesses
• Chronology of events

Thomas’ story:

After the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, the Lord appeared to ten of His disciples.  Thomas was missing and would not believe that the other disciples had seen the risen Lord.

Thomas stated, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were and put my hand into His side, I will not believe it.”    (John 20:25)

• He wanted to see physical evidence
• He had to have a personal experience
• He placed conditions on his belief in Christ
• He did not trust his closest friends’ story
• He did not recall the teachings of Jesus

But Jesus showed himself to Thomas and Thomas believed

“Jesus said, …Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”        (John 20:29)

There are four truths toward believing in Christ.

1. God has made Himself plain for you to see Christ: 

We cannot see Jesus in person today but we can see evidence all around us of His creation and design. “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen…so that men are without excuse.”  (Rom. 1:20)

2. There is a spiritual battle for your soul:

• There is a veil that covers people’s hearts when the Pentateuch is read  (2 Cor. 3:14-15)
• “The god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers to that they cannot see the light of the Gospel.”  (2 Cor. 4:3-4)
• “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away”.   (2 Cor. 3:16)

3. Faith is required for belief in Christ:

It is a heart issue not a sight issue:

“By grace you have been saved through faith – this is not of yourselves, it is the gift from God – not by works…”  (Eph. 2:8-9)

4. Make a choice to accept Christ:

“Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts”  (Heb. 4:7)
